Take the Student Technology Survey

Monday, April 19th, 2010

The following message is from the folks of the Center for Teaching & Learning. Please help them out by taking the survey! Thanks.

We are interested in the kinds of technology students, like you, use in your personal and academic lives. This survey also contains questions about your experiences with technology in your classes, and your preferences when it comes to using technology as a learning tool. Your responses will help us design better learning environments for our students and develop specialized training opportunities for our faculty.

By visiting the survey site, all Queens College students are eligible to enter in a drawing with prizes including one iPod Touch and ten $10 iTunes gift cards.

Thanks for your help in improving instructional technology at Queens!

Blog entry: Getting serious

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

For this blog entry, you will start the literature/background as well as methodology sections of your final paper. Part of the assignment are also ethical considerations when conducting your research.

Your entry should consist of the following:

– ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY of at least three academic references; i.e. the proper citation for each reference (check your textbooks if you can’t remember how to cite properly) and a paragraph summarizing the content of the article/book, and an explanation of how it relates to your project. If you are working in a team, each teammember will have to review at least two different sources.

Remember: for your final paper, you will have to include at least 5 academic references.

– METHODOLOGY: describe in detail what methods (visual as well as non-visual) you will use conducting your research, and explain WHY you chose them (what information do you hope to gain from these methods / what use will that information have in your overall project?).

– ETHICS: what are the ethical considerations for your project, concerning privacy, informed consent, copyright, harm/benefits etc? How do you plan to deal with them?

This entry is due on your blogs on Wed, April 14, at 1pm.

Next blog entry: VISUAL EXPLORATION

Monday, March 22nd, 2010
VISUAL EXPLORATION
Post two pictures on your blog, both relating to the topic of your final project:
* one you have taken yourself
* one you have found somewhere (a historical picture, a family picture, etc). Make sure that you have permission to post the pictures you have “found” and reference their source or origin properly. Here are is a list of links for public domain or creative-sommons licensed content:
Choose meaningful pictures and write a short paragraph each about how they relate to your topic.
Post both pictures and your notes on your blog by Wednesday, March 24, at noon.

For next week

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Since you are all working tirelessly on your midterms, there are no new readings assigned for next Monday. Just make sure you complete the readings posted for this week!

If you missed either last class or (the beginning of) class today, please make sure to complete the following:

* write a detailed blog entry about your final project idea. It should be 2+ paragraphs, describing your topic and your possible methodology in as much detail as possible. Please, also add the name of your collaborator, if you have one. (If you work in a group, make sure both of you post your proposal.)

* I have assigned you to a “comment group” (http://vissoc.qwriting.qc.cuny.edu/2010/03/17/groups-for-comments/). Find your name on there, and write a comment to the project proposal on both your group members’ blog entries. This comment should be in form of an (intelligent) question or recommendation (Just imagine you had my role for a moment).

* if you had posted your proposal on Monday already, please see the comments from your fellow group mates and write a reply (in form of another comment) as if you would respond to them. Please refer to them personally by their usernames.

I will grade your blogs on Friday for the first time. Grades will be posted on Blackboard.

Keep tagging your blogs! 🙂

Good luck for the midterm! Email me with questions.

For Wednesday and TO DO

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Your midterm exam is posted below; also the pictures for question #2.

Please make sure you complete the readings marked “Banks Ch. 4” for Wednesday. Also, please read the following (short) articles on copyright and creative commons:
http://blogs.qc.cuny.edu/blogs/blogtutorials/2005/01/understanding_copyright.html
http://www.lib.umn.edu/copyright/fairuse.phtml

If you haven’t done so yet, please finish your blog entry about your final project idea. It should be 2+ paragraphs, describing your topic and your possible methodology in as much detail as possible. Please, also add the name of your collaborator, if you have one.
(Have a look at my comments to your earlier posts on the final project, maybe they will be helpful.)

One more TO DO:
I would like to change the way I communicate with you — away from relying on Blackboard (and the qc email addresses) by using the class blog and email addresses of your choice. For that, please do the following:
* sign in to the dashboard of your blog
* click on your name in the upper right corner
* under “contact info”, find your email address. If it’s not the one you would like me to use please change it. (wordpress will send a confirmation email to the new email address, so make sure to find that email and to click on the link listed there)
* stay signed in to your blog. go to our main class blog and add yourself as a user to the blog (see the link on the top of the left sidebar)
After all of you have signed on to the class blog, I will start sending emails through wordpress. Thank you!

Keep adding tags to your blog entries (including previous ones) and watch your tag cloud grow!
